As this is a private tour, you can choose your preferred starting time and location. Most travelers begin at 8:30 AM, with pickup from their downtown Shanghai hotel.
Relax during the comfortable 60-minute drive to Zhujiajiao Ancient Water Town, a beautifully preserved village known for its peaceful canals, stone bridges, and Ming–Qing dynasty architecture. As Shanghai fades into the distance, you’ll get a glimpse of traditional life in rural China.
Upon arrival, stroll the narrow cobblestone streets lined with traditional shops, teahouses, and local food stalls. Visit the 16th-century Fangsheng Bridge, explore centuries-old buildings, and browse handcrafted goods. Sample authentic local delicacies like zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), zharou (steamed pork wrapped in bamboo), and locally brewed rice wine.
Next, enjoy a tranquil hand-poled gondola ride through the canals. This is a unique opportunity to see Zhujiajiao from the water—just as residents and merchants did hundreds of years ago. Watch daily life unfold along the water’s edge as you float past homes and shops.
You’ll then enjoy lunch at a classic riverside restaurant with beautiful views of the water. Your guide will introduce you to regional cuisine and local specialties. Alternatively, if you prefer to try Shanghai’s famous soup dumplings back in the city, your guide will happily take you to a top local spot and show you how to eat them the right way.
Afternoon: Shanghai City Highlights
After lunch, return to central Shanghai to explore three of the city’s top cultural landmarks:
Jade Buddha Temple – A peaceful, centuries-old temple housing two stunning jade Buddha statues. Learn about the role of Buddhism in Chinese history and culture.
Tianzifang – Located in the French Concession, this trendy maze of narrow alleys is packed with boutique shops, art studios, cafés, and preserved Shikumen architecture from the 19th century.
East Nanjing Road – One of the world’s busiest pedestrian shopping streets, lined with global brands, local vendors, and countless food options. A great place to stroll, shop, or simply people-watch.
After a full day of culture, cuisine, and contrast between old and modern China, you’ll return to your hotel (or a downtown destination of your choice) by around 5:30 PM.
